Pit Bikes

An Introduction To Mini Pit Bikes

Similar to the popular 'go-kart', pit bikes were first introduced by motorcycle enthusiasts who put together good use of spare mini bike parts and a sense of creativity. Since the history of drag racing, Nascar racing, and similar sports that have a large field of competitors, getting around the large area has been a problem often pondered.

The History of Pit Bikes

With the introduction of pitbikes during the 1950s competitors and technicians have had an easier way to get around the track. In the past small, less powerful pocket bikes were used for similar tasks that the pit bike is used for. The pit bikes were more powerful, easier to maneuver, and overall quite more useful when it came to getting around the pits in the late 50s. Many teams still recommend using a pit bike as it cuts valuable time if you need to relay a message or small part over a long distance.

Pit Bikes Design

The design of these mini dirt bikes were based off of earlier full sized motorcycles and most came with the standard four stroke engine. Also included in the design were a horizontal shaft and a flathead engine, which was often found in many lawnmowers. Crank-mounted centrifugal clutches and a chain drive to the rear sprocket was usually found in many of the power transmissions used with early pit bikes. Later more sophisticated models featured a small variable-ratio power belt system named the 'Tourque-a-Verter', which similar to a snowmobile, allowed better conversion of power from the engine to the rear wheels. This update resulted in a much faster acceleration rate and higher top speeds.

Growing Market for Pit Bikes

As you now know in the beginning pit bikes were mainly used in the racing industry for competitors to get around easier. As time went by more owners of these dirt bikes brought their 'inventions' home to families and friends. This was possibly the main reason why production for the pit bike increased so rapidly. Ideas for a pit dirt bike came into play as it was required for many racers of the famous dirt tracks of the 60s. Now many racers were riding them around neighborhoods which was legal at the time.

Children started to become fascinated by these pitbikes and loved the idea of having a mini version of what many of their parents and role models drove, the motorcycle. Over the next few years the pit bike industry grew by a substantial amount and many famous companies such as Taco, Arctic Cat, Fox, and Rupp started producing these for retailers on a mass level. As with several mini versions of motorcycles, the pit mini moto and pit dirt bike were at the top prime of their business during the late 60s and 70s.

The majority of owners followed such companies as they came out with new and more fuel efficient prototypes over time. There has recently been a huge demand for similar pit bikes due to it's addition to some motocross and supercross competitions. Whether in the 1950s or in todays modern society, pit bikes and dirt pit bikes are a popular choice when it comes to owning a smaller sized motorcycle.
